Have you downloaded any of the critical updates for XP / IE 6 from the Micro$oft site?

First, in Internet Options, under the Advanced tab, scroll down the list until you see the Security section and make sure both SSLs and Fortezza have checks in their boxes.
Secondly, run the Internet Explorer repair utility.

Here's something else to note:
I recently installed a Netgear FVS318 router/spf/switch. A couple of days later, I heard that the company in which I installed it couldn't access Hotmail.
Turns out that the FVS318 has a "keyword blocking" portion of the firewall that, when activated, screws with some SSL sites.
I know this isn't related to your problem, but I thought I'd put this out there. I can imagine many a tech pulling their hair out trying to open ports and crap.
