98 and 98se network problem
i have been tring to get a 98se machine to see a normal 98 pc
at first the 98 se was rejecting all network cards, but i got a linksys to work on it.
the lights on the 98 network card are on but those for the se are off
what am i supposed to do, i running a microsoft network.
and i need to get these machines seeing each other asap.
the both on the same workgroup, and have file and printer settings enabled.
and have the protocols.
if i double click network neighborhood on da 98, i DO see the workgroup name, but the 98 is the only pc in the group.
on the SE i dont see the workgroup name,

Two other things... if the computers are set to autologon or use windows logon this can some times screw up your network check this ms kb out for the registry fix and I did come across one situation where wiggling the rj45 connector solved all the problems

If you aren't getting link lights the problem isn't in the software...either the nic is toast or the cable is funky...BTW, what kinda cable/hub setup are you using? If you have just the two computers and are using one cable it has to be a crossover cable...can't use a regular cable in that scenario...Check the cables, then the ports on the hub (If you have one) first, then focus on the software
