TCP/IP on a standalone machine

I have a standalone (no modem, nic, etc.) Windows 98 machine and installed TCP/IP on it. However, it seems that TCP/IP isn't installed. I try to ping localhost (127.0.0.1) and it comes back with an error. Very weird. Does it have anything to do with the fact I have no modem or nic? Do I need a special adapter?

yes.
what do you need TCP/IP loaded for on a PC with not modem or nic? what is that address you are trying to ping? If you are not connected to anything, you will get no results. I'm confused i guess.

I'm sorry I didn't explain that better. I want to install Apache and experiment with it as a mock web server. I want to set the web server up on localhost, and I need to have TCP/IP installed correctly to do so.

Try this: Install a Dial-up Adapter from the Network control panel (even if you don't have one) then install the TCP/IP protocol from Network control panel, and bind them together. You have to have TCP/IP actually bound to something or it won't work....

Personally, I would get a cheap NIC (not connected to anything) and use that instead.

I installed a VPN adapter earlier and bound that to the TCP/IP. That didn't work. I have a modem laying around here somewhere... I think. That should work. If I don't, I'll find a NIC somewhere.

Just try that installing of a dial-up adapter like MacGyver told... it should work... and then bind tcp/ip to it - if it is installed the ping 127.0.0.1 should work correct (as there is no need to have a physical network present for localhost...)
That VPN-adapter could have a different function so it'll need a counterpart... just drop it

I installed a MaxTech 33.6 and got everything to work fine. One thing. Now my computer hangs on shutdown. (rolls eyes) I'll play with it from here.

Its not going to work properly as win98 only supports as a client (as the os dosen't support multi-adapter networking without sharing) for that type of network, try running linux and working with DNS to get it to work.(Dns allows you to control ip addresses and how they work.)
