Steve's right...not enough info. to help you out...but...
Ifthe scanner happens to be a Microtek, we've seen similar problems with them [I believe it was the X6 variant]. The problem was that we didn't know that all the times we tried to load and reload without success, we had the scanner powered up, and that was the problem. The solution [found at support.microsoft.com] was cycling the power off, then on before connecting USB.
