Hewlett Packard Scanjet 5P problems
I am running under Windows 98.
Having had problems with the Scanjet button manager, I removed all hardware and software from my system and went back through the whole installation process in the right order, including physically reinstalling the SCSI card. The PC recognises the card but then fails to find the driver for the scanner. Eventually I got the message "Error in REG32.DLL Missing Entry: UpdateButtonSupport"
When I fire up the scanning software it doesn't find the scanner. I've tried the suggestion from the HP FAQ's of disabling HP Button Manager from the systray without any benefit. I'm lost - any bright ideas ?

Thanks for the idea. I hadn't tried the reboot without the card, but I have now ! Unfortunately no change and I'm still getting the Reg32.dll message.
I previously attempted to download updated scanning software from Hewlett Packard and I wonder whether that is part of the problem.
On this occasion, I got one attempt at a successful Scanner Test, which failed to detect the Green Button push, and thereafter the HP Scanning software just says it cannot find the scanner, or "the scanner is in use by another application etc." I have tried the HP support solution for that latter point,(disable Button Manager and try again) but that didn't work either. I cannot always find the button manager program either, as it sometimes seems to get "disappeared" from the system, until I reinstall the software.
Sounds like a bit of a mess doesn't it !
Any other miracle workers out there ?

Hi,
Have you tried HP link below for drivers? For Win98, it has drivers dated 11/99:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/swindexes/sj5ppc_swen.html
Also, there are links on the left hand side of that page for Setup and Maintain...also for Solving a Problem...lots of data to go through there...
Also, I assume (and you know what happens when I do that) that your addressess and terminations are set up properly...usually, address 7 is reserved for the SCSI interface itself.
Just a couple of suggestions...
Anyway, Good Luck!

Thanks a lot - I'd already found some of these support topics, but I've found some more with your help. I'll try a couple of them and report back.

Tried a long-winded exercise from the HP Support BB including manual delete of loads of driver files and then cold reinstallation. Guess what - the same problem. A friend says HP scanners are famous for driver problems. I'm getting desperate...

I've got two of these scanners on my junk pile...I don't think there's anything physically wrong with them it was just cheaper and faster to replace them with something newer and faster (I used Microtek 3600 scanners @$59.95).

I think that's where I'm getting to. Not a great advert for Hewlett Packard - think I'll email them and tell them.........

Hi Again,
The link belows talks about the Scanning software...not the drivers itself...
http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport...Tfile=bps02713
About half way down the page, it has HP's DeskScan and also PrecisionScan. Which scanning software are you using?
Anyway, Good Luck!

Thanks - I've put the HP Scanjet 5P back on to my old Win95 PC and replaced it on my Win98 machine with a new one !
What a complex mess the HP support info is.
