HELP! w/ VIA Usb PCI Card
Installing this card on an older socket 7 mainboard with ALI chipset. Have disabled ALI USB OnChip USB (because the connector isn't present anyway). Win 98 SE finds the VIA chipset add-in USB card and appears to be installing the correct driver. But then an exclamation mark appears in device manager by USB Root Hub and properties windows says "The NTKERN.VXD device loader for this device could not load the device driver (Code 2)" Can someone tell me what's wrong here and how to fix it. This is a used computer that is sold tonight...and the new owners want to hook up a USB web cam immediately..............jeez

Try enabling the non-existant usb device in bios - yah I know, but do it anyway ok? Then delete all usb root hub and controllers etc from device manager and reboot and redetect.
If that doesn't work check out the acpi settings in bios.

still no go..
Have tried enabling the ALI onboard USB several times....still doesn't work....just end up with additional exclamation marks in device manager. Have looked at BIOS setting (including ACPI) until I have them memorized. Loaded default values and it still doesn't work.
And just for fun, I enabled the ALI Onboard USB in BIOS, then disabled the VIA USB card in device manager to see what the results would be.....ha, same S*&t, different boot.
I am about to conclude that any hardware with VIA chipset will not work in an ALI chipset mainboard due to the fierce rivalry between the entities and that I should either 1) find a combo PS2 mouse/USB connector that will work with the board or 2) Find another USB PCI card with chipset other than VIA................
Oh yeah....and I thought this would just take a few minutes.

Get the exclamation marks to install as unknown devices and then disable them in device mangler... now try and install the via pci card.

latest idea
This time I hooked a USB cable/bracket (the ones that connect to the pins on the board and mount in the slots on the back of the case). I had booted into safe mode prior to installing the usb cable/bracket and removed all USB entries from the device manager. Upon boot made sure that on-chip USB was enabled in BIOS. Of course, had also physically removed the VIA USB PCI card. Same thing, it recognizes the ALI USB host controller but still has exclamation mark in front of the USB Root Hub? What is most likely to work at this point? Install the root hub as an unknown device?? Search for newer ALI USB driver? I'm not taking this computer to the new owner til it works....

As garak says, what is the error code showing in the general properties in device mangler for the usb root hub?
Did you enable an irq for usb in the bios?
Are there any usb related jumpers on that board?

Error Code
Error code is same as mentioned in first post. "The NTKERN.VXD device loader for this device could not load the device driver (Code 2)."
I have visited usbman.com for some troubleshooting advice and made sure the BIOS setting were as recommended. The board is a Biostar M5A?? (can't remember ??, written down at home). Obtained latest bios for the board and plan to flash when I get home this evening. What is an IRQ shuffle?
Haven't had a problem like this in a while so I'm a bit rusty on resolving IRQ conflicts. Doesn't appear to be a conflict. I am also going to visit Biostar's site today and view the manual for this board and check jumper settings.

The irq shuffle is physically moving the board to a different slot. Nowadays the pci slots share with onboard - so if you have picked a slot that shares with the onboard usb that would cause a problem. Check which slots share with what and try again.

ms knowledge base
I did try moving the PCI USB card to different slots but it didn't help. Just went back to MS Knowledge Base and found Article #Q299264 - can't wait to try it. I swear....I did a search of the knowledge base a few days ago and typed in the error just as I did this morning and it came up with nothing. Today, it lists numerous articles and this one was second in the list.............go figure.

Thanks
NooNoo, noticed your motto on here a few weeks ago and couldn't agree more. In fact my experience has been that if the customer thinks they have a major problem, really totally screwed things up, I can often fix it in a few minutes. But when it seems to be something minorly wrong to the customer, it usually turns out to be a major headache for me.
I've been reading these boards for years but seldom post. When I do need help, I know this is the place to go. Thanks for the support.

I still cannot let Windows Update install the 'Microsoft USB driver V5.1.2600.0'. This is on a W2000+SP3 computer. A computer without SP3 does not suggest installing it. I can't find the download either.
