Phone lines......
Ok, here is one for the telecomunication guys.....
I am running a phone line out to my shop (The Igloo ) and I was going to tie into one of the lines coming into the house. Well I buy the line, I figure ya just hook up all of the lines to the samce color, right? Well, nothing is ever that easy, the phone line that the builder has coming into the house is a Cat3, The wire that I got is just a typical 4 wire phone line. And a typical phone only has two.... So my question is what wire goes where?? I worked on phones a while ago, so I am familar with the Tip, and Ring lines, but what gives with the Cat3 cable??? And ideas, or comments would be greatly appreciated.....
Ill post some pics of "The Igloo" once its finished

Telephone Wiring
The standard home telephone wire now consists of only four thin wires bundled into a standard modular plug. As we all know, the wires and connectors simply snap into each other. Look closely at the end of any of the connectors. You should see Red, Green, Black and Yellow wires. Almost all home connections consist of four wire set ups. Two wires make up one phone line.
Line One = Red and Green
Line Two = Black and Yellow
The amperage and voltage contained in the wires is very low, so don't worry about getting a shock. The block should be marked inside with wire colors.

cc_penguin you should go to Home Depot or a similar hardware store and get one of those $5 phone line testers one like this will tell you if you have dial tone and if you have crossed polarity.
you can fool around with it and take off all but 1 pair till you find the pair that has dial tone, and if you have crossed polarity on that line, I'd fix it to decrease line noise, and extra workload you might get on your modem.

50V of phone can give a fair jolt, be careful.
Ber consistant in you're wiring conventions, and you'll be fine (although there will be possible legal implications to working on the phone line, if you're not qualified).

Try sticking a 9 volt battery to your braces.... it will knock you out, trust me.
