    Unhappy AMD help!!!

I've got a box here with a significant issue...it'll just reboot once in a while, sometimes go for 48+ hours without doing it, or might do it seconds after boot, these as the specs

AMD XP1800 *cooler master cpu fan*
    ECS K7S5A mb
    512MB Crucial PC2100 DDR
    Max 40gb 7200rpm hdd
    plextor cd-rw
    realtek nic
    2 antec 80mm case fans
    Geforce4 4200 vc
    midtower case 300watt ps
    Win XP home (no sp)
    NAV 2002
    Office 2000 Pro

It will once in a while spontaneously reboot, in any app, or doing absolutely nothing. Sometimes it will run for hours and hours and nothing unusual will occur. And sometimes it'll boot, and you fire up an app and..bam...reboot.

Have run TroubleShooter on it for hours, BurnIn for hours, MemTest passes, all the HW tests out fine. Nothing unusual in software at startup. AV definitions up to date and scanned.

We have replaced the Allied PS with a nice Enlight 300watt ps, just in case. CPU temp is within AMD spec at idle and 100% load, cpu passes all tests, case fan rps steady, Geforce monitor is all in the green. We even tried having on another surge protector and then on a known good UPS! and I'm at wits end here, and the drink machine is out of 'Dew!! Any ideas? suggestions? please help!

**only thing i've run into out on some sites was some mention of Norton 2002 not getting along in some cases with WinXP, and sudden reboots were mentioned, anyone else experience anything like that?**

I'm about ready to throw the fsuking box in the compactor...

How are your BIOS settings? Are you using failsafe settings with the same results?

Have you unchecked automatically restart in start up and recovery? If not you will just get the reboot and never the bsod that tells you what its complaining about.

Chances are if you are having spontanious reboots with a GF card in a system, you are using the 23.11, 23.12 or the winxp built in drivers......bad idea get the 30.82's what are WHQL certified from www.nvidia.com

We've tried optimal and failsafe settings in the BIOS. System exhibits the same behavior. Tried the latest BIOS revision on the board earlier in the week, this box is killing me!!

NooNoo, thanks am gonna try that and see if its checked. Maybe I can get a bsod with an error message this time! Then try to track it from there.

I've got this sinking feeling its gonna lead back to either bad MB,CPU, Ram........

Thats another thought, I think that the GF card is using the reference drivers from gainward. maybe installing the newest detonator drivers might help, nothing could hurt at this point.

I would be SO incredibly pleased if its a software issue. =)

don't rule out power supply (especially if generic) which can be the biggest culprit of this type of behavior. Everything's running good then the PS spikes or sags and whamo - reboot.

I have the exact same issue.

On advice from a fellow tech up here I scanned my Maxtor HDD and found an odd error that notes my HDD has some sort of error (I've ignored it since as it's been good lately). You may find the scan tool on Maxtors site.

I've also removed a few cards/drives that may have been overtaxing the PSU - only 300watts - generic. So I lend credance to checking your PSU.

Try the updated GF drivers.. We had the same problem here, still do at times. The newer drivers help somewhat.

Look for swollen or leaking capacitors on your motherboard. Just a thought.

    Update

Installed updated drivers, patches, still would shut down. Tried new PS, memory....

Unchecked the "restart on error" and got the actual BSOD. And the error codes when looked up on KB say, likely NTFS tables hosed. Gahhhh!!

Looks like a reinstall....well, glad to know its not hardware

    Thanks everyone!!!
