    Question Can anyone help

Since I lost my last job the only things down here have demanded degrees or certification. Dealing with unemployment if I want to keep being able to draw unemployment compensation I have to interview some Network/Sys Admins. Is there anyone willing to help and answer some question?

    Unhappy Here are the Questions

I know these seem silly but it is what TWC wants.

    1. What kind of training is required for a Network/System Administrator?

    2. What degrees, special courses, or certifications are needed for a Network/System Administrator?

    3. What are the duties, pressures, risks, resposibilities, travel, supervision for a Network/System Administrator?

    4. What do you enjoy most about your job?

    5. What do you dislike most about our job.

    6. What are the salary level and experience required for a Network/System Administrator?

    7. Based on your knowledge of the local labor market, how would you describe the demand for a Network/System Administrator?
I can win any argument with any computer made yet. Since they really haven't learned to fight back.

    Re: Here are the Questions

I'm not currently a sysadmin, but my previous one was my next one most probably will be too. This is from a Canadian perspective.

    1. What kind of training is required for a Network/System Administrator?
Mimimum of specialized professional training or college

    2. What degrees, special courses, or certifications are needed for a Network/System Administrator?
None. But some offices will be impressed with them. check out CramSession for a complete list. Keep Microsoft, Novell, Cisco, Network+ and even Checkpoint open as possibilities.

    3. What are the duties, pressures, risks, resposibilities, travel, supervision for a Network/System Administrator?
You can expect to be on call 24/7, so plan ahead when negociating contracts with an employer.
You will most probably be the only person who can be counted on to have the information suppliers, outside consultants, fellow workers and department heads need, so be prepared - know your network inside an out. Draw plans (Visio is really good for this). You'll like the position but probably hate the imposition on your person, time and skills.

    4. What do you enjoy most about your job?
The challenge, the constant learning of new skills and technologies.

    5. What do you dislike most about our job.
Stupid questions. Trust me - we all get them. Think helpdesk, but in hell.

    6. What are the salary level and experience required for a Network/System Administrator?
I would tend to say that the minimum IT experience of a network admin would be 2 years of hands-on technical work. Salaries tend to vary between 30 000 $ and 80 000 $ CAN depending on experience, certification (I know, I know...) and skillset.

    7. Based on your knowledge of the local labor market, how would you describe the demand for a Network/System Administrator?
Stable for now, but an increase is on the way. Look into wireless and security as being highest in demand in the coming years

Training by experience is more important than training by books. Certifications may help you get the job, but experience is what will help you keep it.

    2. What degrees, special courses, or certifications are needed for a Network/System Administrator?

None, but they are often used to narrow down a bunch of job applications.

    3. What are the duties, pressures, risks, resposibilities, travel, supervision for a Network/System Administrator?

Varies greatly from company to company. The admin is ultimately responsible for the network's health. Hopefully, the admin has a good staff so he/she does not get too many late night calls.

    4. What do you enjoy most about your job?

I am always in the same building, administrating the same network. No traveling to a strange company to work on a system you know nothing about.

    5. What do you dislike most about our job.

I would like to be able to gain more knowledge from my co-workers.

    6. What are the salary level and experience required for a Network/System Administrator?

Depends much on the company. A small company probably will not pay as well, but it will be easier to get the position. A larger company will probably pay better, but you may never achieve the position.

    7. Based on your knowledge of the local labor market, how would you describe the demand for a Network/System Administrator?

    Low.

    Hope this helps you.
