I steal the 80mm fan grills off old machines that have them on the powersupply. Most new computers use a stamped out grille.

I grabbed a couple of old PCI 3com 900 NIC's. Old, but still better than that new Dlink/Realtek crap.

At our company we glean every minute amount of processing power out of everything we can. We're presently FINALLY doing away with the 486's. Not much to save there.

I get to keep my reference books from the classes I get sent to.

Absolutely nothing! I would be fired, and I have too good a job to risk it. Too bad too, because we tend to waste things that I think still have value.

we didn't sell used systems so any upgrades done i kept the used parts...4 and 8 gig HD's are perfectly usable . so were socket 370 motherboards, most of which were Intel or ASUS. ATX cases that were not banged up i kept. memory usually went into shop systems.

    Let's see...

    • Several Sound Blaster (Ensoniq, PCI128) and misc. other brands of crappy sound cards.
    • 1x Asus P2B motherboard.
    • 1x Celeron 333 CPU.
    • 1x PII 350 CPU.
    • 4x 20Gb hard disks.
    • 1x HP LaserJet 5.
    • 1x HP OfficeJet multifunction.
    • 2x Canon 240 inkjet.
    • 3x Creative Labs 48X
    • 2x 52X LG CD-Rom drives.
    • 1x Voodoo 3 3000 graphics card.
    • 1x NVidia Manta graphics card.
    • 2x ATI Rage IIc graphics cards.
    • 2x 486 IBM Thinkpad 750c laptops.
    • 1x Compaq Armada 486 laptop.
    • 1x Kensington mouse
    • 1x Busted Palm IIIe with kit.
    • Numerous sticks of PC66, PC100, PC133 in 32, 64, 128 and 256Mb configurations.
    • That's all I can remember...

    A word of explanation:
These were items which were either "left-over" from projects or to be thrown out as unnecessary in my previous job as network manager in a public hospital. When I originally came into this position in 1999, we were filling garbage bins with these things during the Y2K overhaul.

Yes, these are your Canadian tax dollars at work.

Some may notice a striking similarity to items on this list and the current specs of my home system.
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. -Douglas Adams
