Bad CD rom controller in device manager

does anyone know what causes the cd rom controller under windows 98 to alter it's resourses? i have noticed this more recently. in some cases, it does not effect the cd rom drive itself, but in others it renders the drive useless.
i have tried removing, and rebooting and allso reinstalling the drivers. sometimes it works other times not.
has anyone else had this situation?

One thing to make sure is that there are no dos level cd-rom drivers loaded in either the config.sys and autoexec.bat files.
Type in sysedit under the run command and press enter.

Look through those 2 files.

Those can conflict with win98's controller settings.

Another issue could be chipset driver issue.

Do you no what chipset is on you main board??

Could also be an issue of the cdrom drive not being seen during bootup.
Your cd-rom might be going flakey.
what model is your cd-rom drive??

I have also seen the registry change itself to "noide" for no particular reason, this means removing the ide controllers from the enum key in safe mode and re detecting them, simply removing the noide key rarely works for me.

Compatiblilty mode is another cause.
