HP LaserJet 5L

I installed an HP 5L locally to one of the pcs in my office, and when the user tries to print a window pops up and the message is 'user intervention needed'. If he clicks the ok button, the window goes away and it prints. Does anyone know what this is and how I can solve this annoying problem?

Go to Start Button, Settings, Printers. Right click on the offending printer. Make sure "Work Offline" is NOT checked.

I've seen other LaserJets act the same way when it is set up for Manual Feed. Are there any lights flashing on the front of the printer? If the middle one is flashing, then it is waiting for you to add a piece of paper to the single sheet input slot. You can press and release the Front Panel button...or, you can turn off manual feed within your software application if you do not wish the printer to pause between sheets.

Just a thought in case this is not technical but user intervention. Is the printer set to the right sort of paper? Eg. in Windows/Word etc, you may have the page set to A4 but the printer is set to default to Letter or some other stationery.

Newer printers usually have message "Load A4" etc, but this may be translated as "User intervention" I guess.

You may want to check bi-directional printing support.
To do this go into your computers BIOS & check your lpt1 connection is set to ECP OR Bi-directional.
You also may want to download the latest print drivers from HP.
Another thought is to try a different printer cable. Look for IEE84 on the cable. To Identify it is compatible.
