    Question Changing Windows Registration

I have a client who just bought a used PC with Win98se installed, it runs well, but he brought it in to my office and asked how can he put his name on the Windows 98 registration to his name instead.....

    Good Question I said...
and I had no Immediate answer...

I have never ran into a such a request, and I'm sure it's an easy one, but I can't remember...

Thanx for any and all assistance....

Start>Help>"Registration">Register Now. Make sure client is online. Note: If this is someone's else's computer and registered in someone elses name, he may not be able to register because Microsoft would already have a record of someone else's name on file. Therefore it wouldn't do any good to try to say, change the system registry to fit the new owner.

He may have to purchase another copy and install it. If this is the case he can get an unused copy pretty easily on Ebay or Half.com for about 15-35 dollars.

Also, what would be the point? If it was pre-registered, I don't believe the three free technical support incidences from Microsoft would be transferrable.

    The answer.

To change the registration information in Windows:

You need to open your registry (Be careful backup first).

    Open the Registry:

Click on the Start menu, and select Run.
Type in "regedit" in the field, and click OK.

    Find the key:

    Windows 98: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion

Modify 'RegisteredOwner' and 'RegisteredOrganization' to become whatever you desire.

    The end.
