Faulty Maxtor ATA 133
OK, have run power diag on this drive and its screwed. Darn, after getting rid of my old IBM 60GXP's I'm now faced with this. Anyway the maxor software is offering the option to fix drive, which I dont want to do as I can get an RMA. What I dont want to happen is to send it back and then get it returned after the retailer has used this option. Any advice?

vapd get an rma direct from maxtor... but the likelihood of the shop bothering to run it up because maxtor has no quibble rma is pretty small and the "fix" rarely works... Besides, if you are taking it back to the shop, you can expect an immediate replacement.

Cheers NooNoo, another question thou, if I use the 'fix' and it works am I likly to get the same prob again in future?
Edit: actyally one more thing, I was advised that fdisk on a win98se boot disk would not be able to handel a raid array, I tried it anyway and it seemed to present no problems until format C came up with 'cannot find allocation unit' (or similar) anyway I am a little (not much) worried that it was possible for fdisk to screw the drive if used on a raid? Is this just a paranoid worrey or is it not good to use this prog?

As to the maxtor, yes it may fix it, and yes it may go wrong again... I did it 3 times, then got an rma from maxtor no problem.
As to the raid bit - I havent played with raid, so I couldn't tell you.

I have had no problem using fidisk on a raid 0 array, Just make sure you use the latest version that can handle a drive biggern than 64 gig
There is a math issue with older versions,, I have fidsiked and formatted on my raid 0 array

Cheers, the version of fdsik I used was from bootdisk.com and seemed to work fine. It didnt see all 120Gb of the combined drives but that was fine as all I wanted was a 30Gb partition for games and the rest was for win2k. Will have to waut for new drive
Right, I've used power max to fix the drive and am now running burn in loops to try and recreate the error. I have contacted the retailer asking for a new drive should the error reoccur again but have had no response no surprise. Noo Noo, can you tell me how quickly the errors reoccured when you used the fix on your drive?
