P4B And ALS AC'97" Codec and Winxp

I can't get the onboard sound to work in XP-Pro on a P4 1.7 Ghz P4B Asus motherboard. The Post Reporter functions fine, however there is no sound in Windows. I have tried the drivers on Asus sight as well as a few reference drivers found elsewhere. The sound is enabled in Bios as well as Midi support. Any suggestions besides get an off board solution? This board and cpu are going to my dad when he gets out of the hospital, So I would like it to give him answers when he asks how to set it up..thanks in Avance, errr, I mean advance.

In device manager what devices do you have listed under sound?

In control panel, sounds and audio devices whats listed under the audio tab? In the volume tab are the settings correct?

Finally, what color jack have you plugged the speakers into? Are they powered speakers?

Thanks for the reply NooNoo. As far as devices listed there are just the typical Codecs listed as well as the gameport midi controller and MPU401 the ALS codec when drivers are loaded shows the gratuitous ! in yellow but says nothing about a problem otherwise, When the device is removed and the system is rebooted nothing is detected for sound. The speakers I am using are the Altec Lansing 200 series for test purposes and they are plugged into the lime green connector, the speakers work at bootup for the bios post reporter, in case you are not familiar with this it's the speach at P.O.S.T. that tell's you everything is O.K. or if a problem exists. I have used ALS 400 and 1000 sound cards in the past with no problem, I just can not seem to figure this one out.

Can I ask you to check again in device manager this tiem - what code is there?

Under the properties for the AC 97 Avance when forced to install gives code 10 this device can not start, when the device is uninstalled it will not appear again until once again forced to install, almost like XP is saying it really doesn't exist but yet it does exist as proven by bios post reporter.

I had a very similar problem lately with another brand board using the ac97 chipset for onboard sound, and finally got it to work by using the win2000 drivers instead of the xp drivers
win2000 are here in the middle of the page:

also, a quick search of google turned up a couple of issues with the ac97 audio, mostly related to upgraded bios not finding the chip after the bios was upgraded, but there were a few threads on other forums about the chip not working after overclocking the processor. Have you downloaded the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard?..not the audio driver, the i845 chipset driver from intel? I think that is here:

If you look in your asus manual you will find that the pci slots share irqs with various onboard devices... check which slots share with the sound, see what is in those slots and, for the moment, remove them... if the sound can then install with the other hardware removed you have your answer... good luck!

    Arrow Bloomin' stupid things.....

At this point please note that there are two different AC97 chips & two different drivers.....

Depending whether the chip is correctly identified by the o/s the 'wrong' driver may appear to install correctly but produce no sound, code 10 (device not functioning)....

There are only two versions so try the other from ViaTech.com, you need to completely remove all the offending items from device manager first....

To NooNoo, no other pci cards installed at this point only AGP card.
To Confus-ed, i845 chipset, not Via.
The ALS drivers are plainly marked ALS 201 for VIA chipset and simply ALS 201.
To much hassle with this onboard audio and XP, I'm getting him a Creative card and will just call it a day.

Okay - but there's still two versions of the chip whichever chipset its coupled to (& ergo 2 drivers...?)

Any suggestions besides get an off board solution?
    Perhaps

    Perhaps
Yes, I don't even want to think of trying to use the VIA based driver with an Intel chipset

He can still use the bios post reporter through the pc speaker if he wants to, it's a nice feature, and my mom will wonder who the woman is talking to him when he turns on the computer....LOL
