I need help with networking a 98 and a 98se.
I had been having some problems, with the two pc's seeing
each other. When a brought a laptop(XP) to test the network
the laptop could see each computer when connected to each
end of the wireing (no hub, just 1 long ethernet cable)
If a place a hub (try to follow) at either end of the cable
and use a second ethernet cable to connect the closer pc to the hub
the light for the closer pc would light up on the hub. But the light
for the pc furthest away would not light up. It occurs on both
ends of the First ethernet cable
Pc1---*(hub)----------------------Pc2
light for Pc1 would light up on hub but Pc2 light on hub not on
Pc1----------------------(hub)*---Pc2
Light for Pc1 off but light for Pc2 is on.

Sounds like you got 1 crossover cable and 1 patch cable.

If you connect both PC's to the hub, both cables need to be patch cables.

Yup - all machines should be connected via the hub, unless you don't want any expandability of your network, in which case you can connect the pc's with a crossover and lose the hub.

Agree with both posts above
Basically with a cross over cable the data goes out the output on one PC and into the input on the other and vice versa,hence the crossover having different wiring at each end of the cable terminations[Look at the RJ45 plugs side by side to check]
On a hub us straight through cables [patch leads] and the hub takes care of sorting the input and output data flow.
Because your using a crossover on the hub its losing the data at the hub because its routed the wrong way,a new patch lead will sort this out.
