    it says it is installed correctly, just won't let me change to 16 million colors or anything above 640 x 480....

    EDIT: would this have anything to do with me not finding drivers for the mobo Diamond Flower Mobo, VP3-596B-DD

    Is it listed in device manager correctly? I had a IIC but I don't remember windows automatically installing it...

    they have win 98 on this machine.

    will the acer ati lt drivers work for win 95 98....

    Or try booting to safe mode, change the video to pci vga adapter... boot to normal mode.

    Change adapter - and rather than let windows search, show all hardware and select the rage IIc drivers manually.

    Gotta love those ATI video cards <g>

    For starters, don't go to ATI's driver page; it is worthless.

    Try http://www.rageunderground.com & see what's posted in their archives. This site is maintained by gamers, for gamers, and these guys are at the top of their respective food chains.

    When you score a driver, use these two hacks to get around the 256-color/640x480 limitation:

    1) Find the [display] section under your SYSTEM.INI and eliminate any entries that currently exist there. Don't panic if there is no [display] section . . . simply create one & be sure to place it before the [386Enh] section of the .INI file. After you have cleaned up the [display] section, place a single entry directly under the [display] section, as shown below:

    [display]
    devbmp=0

    Save changes to your .INI file, but don't exit yet as there is still a bit of work to be done

    2) Next, use Control Panel>System>Device Manager>Display adapters>ATI Rage IIC (or what-have you) and find what interrupt the card is using by highlighting the entry and choosing 'Properties'/'Resources'. Once you know what IRQ the ATI card is using, make this modification to the [386Enh] section of your SYSTEM.INI

    ***NOTE: It really DOES matter what order this stuff gets listed in at load time, so be sure to place the new entries at the beginning of the section. For purposes of demonstration, I've made the assumption that IRQ11 is the placeholder for the ATI card. This is probably dead wrong, so be sure that you substitute the correct IRQ when you make the entry to your .INI file.

    [386Enh]
    MinSPS=12
    IRQ11=4096
    DMABufferSize=64
    MaxDMAPGAddress=1000

    Save the changes, close your editor, & reboot the machine (better still . . . to save time and avoid having to wait for the machine to POST, just restart the computer in MS-DOS Mode and immediately enter the command EXIT at the DOS prompt)
