CDROM and HD on master ide.

I have never done this before, and all parts aren't here yet for the system to try.

I am building a computer for a guy that wants a CDRW, CDROM, and another 4x multi cdrom...it can hold 4 cds and swtich between them...anyways.

Can I put the CDRW, CDROM on ide2 and the HD and 4 cdrom on the primary? Will there be conflicts?

Curious to know cause he wants all of these on his system.

That should work okay. It may slow performance however. Also if he plans on copying cd's ( for backup purposes of course) you should probably put the cdrw and cdrom on separate cables, though it may still work the way you said.

You might want to consider adding a promise ide controller..that way you get an ide channel for each drive. Pretty inexpensive at the moment too

That is good advice. If he doesn't want to spend anymore money though I would put the HD and the burner on the same chain seeing how most burners are at least UDMA 33 (if it's newer). On each IDE chain both drives will only be as fast as the slower drive (a UDMA 100HD will drop down to UDMA 33 (the speed of the cdrom))

Is this device new? I ask, because in the past these things would slow performance to a halt on most PC's when opening explorer or My Computer, because the device would actually go through each disk before showing all of the drives. I event tried an external SCSI CD changer, and it did the same thing. Test it out, if it works like this, tell the guy that it would not be advised, and let him make the decision to remove it from the list of hardware.

No the device is definetely not new, and there is no way he would ever get rid of it

He has moved the thing from PC to PC since he has had it because of the work he does he likes to have mutliple CD's in the drive at once and doesn't like switching them out constantly.

I am going to try and see how it works on the system I am building and I will go from there. I have used it before on his computer and it is slow, but not dreadfully. I guess it will be whatever he can live with.

how do i need to set the jumpers on the CD Rom drives... because the slaves are not present on the autodetect...

On each chain (primary and secondary) you should have one master and one slave.

Make your hard drive the master on the primary controller, with one of the CDRoms as the slave. Then on the secondary I'd make the burner the master, with your remaining device the slave.

In the bios make sure all are set to AUTO detect.

Definately do not put the hard drive as master and any cdrom as slave. Like someone else saidm, use a promise controller for the extra drives if you have to - they are pretty cheap. if you have a cdrom on with your hard drive, instead of ata 100 speed, you will be dealing with ata 33.

Another thought, get another Hard Drive and set as slave, lose the old multi CD-ROM and create virtual CD drives on the slave drive.
