    I just installed a MIS 6340M motherboard. Every time I tried to boot up, all I could get was the self-test image for the monitor stating the monitor was O. K. and that I should check the PC or cabling. Well, after toying around with the board for some time I discovered that I could remove a jumper pin and my system would start as expected. This jumper pin when on, sets the FSB to 133 MHz and when off sets the FSB to 100 MHZ. My understanding is that the FSB is used to connect the CPU to main memory. My CPU is a Duron 1.0 GHz. And my memory is in 2 sticks of PC 133, 128 MB each.

    I wonder why my system would not start, as my RAM is PC133? All I had connected to the MB at the time was the PSU, mouse, and keyboard. I also did NOT have the chipset drivers loaded at this point as I could not access my CD-ROM.

    Any ideas and is there that much of a recognizable performance difference between 100 and 133?

    well my my quick checking , a duron runs at 100 (or 200mhz) the way u look at it ,

    Athlons run at 133 (or 266),

    so basicly u are overclocking the processor .


    your memory is capable of running speeds of 133 (or 266) , but your CPU is rated at 10 x 100 = 1000.


    u may be able to overclock your cpu by altering the multiplyer / and or raising the FSB above 100 (in small incriments)

    I have a duron 800 - overclocked to 900 ie instead of 8x100 i use 9x100 ,,,,if i push it much further i get failures.

    stick with 10x100 till u set the machine up proper , then if u wan,t more go , start playing around.

    one final note: If u want to exceed your CPUs rated output ,then concider the cooling aspect.

    If u overclock your CPU u will cause more heat and req more cooling,

    You should be able to set the memory speed to 133 in the BIOS after you get it running.

    doc , he,s clearly stating he,s QUOTE: This jumper pin when on, sets the FSB to 133 MHz ,

    yes he wants to run the memory at 133 but he,s trying to run a 100mhz CPU at 133

    that is clearly OVERCLOCKING his cpu , not his memory


    the memory will revert back to 100 ,,,but he,s over clocking the FSB

    Thanks for the help. The FSB is not what I thought. I thought the CPU I purchased said it was 200 MHz. I probably misread the specs in the catalog.

    Err for a 1 gig duron it is..

    But the fetch execute cycle is modified with these chips so 100 is really the answer, but it does 2 memory lookups per cycle so 200...

    For an Athlon 266 you get two 133 lookups but with DDR either PC1600(200 fsb) or PC2100( 266 fsb) it does it in one pass like it should.

    Memory speed wise 133 mem shouldn't make any difference is should run at 100, but usually you can be more aggressive with Ras & cas settings, however if you want to turn up the fsb (overclock) you'll have more luck than with pc100 mem.

    No doubt you have PC133 mem because its the same price as Pc100....

    As for 100 v 133, remember when chips were 66? Its the same, 33% improvement on memory handling, but the PCI bus is the bottleneck, still it generally goes much better,....
