HP 882C "Fails to Print" On XP
I am having problems printing to an HP 882C USB on a new Dell running Windows XP. This same printer was connected to a gateway running Windows XP some few weeks ago and installed/printed with no problems.
When the Dell boots up, it detects the printer but detects it wrong as an 880C rather than an 882C. But, I have deleted the printer and then gone to “Server Properties” to also delete the drivers. Then, I use the “Add Printer” wizard and manually install the 882C by selecting it from a list. I check the ports to ensure it is in fact printing to a USB port, which it is. But, when I try to print, I get an error message that it simply “failed to print”. The printer begins to print and goes as far as t print the top of the test page with the “Windows XP Printer Test Page” on the top of the paper but then stops.
Any ideas on this would be appreciated as I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled several times.

I would start by changing the usb cable,
then the port
Checking that the motherboard drivers are installed, and if its a via chipset, whether the usb filter patch may help.
Check that an irq is assigned to the usb port in bios and seeing what other hardware is sharing with the usb as well.

In followup to what NooNoo suggested, go here to read up on Troubleshooting USB Chipset Issues. Lots of good info there...
Also, go here for Manuals for the 882C. Pretty recent release date: 22-Sep-2002. Just might have something else in there that you're missing.

With respect to my fellow members,
Try activating the printer with HP DJ 550 Driver (System driver).
This driver works with almost every DJ series printer - yes it lack some of the "advanced" (and mostly un-needed) options.
This is a simple workaround - I do agree that if the cable is BAD than this proposal won't help you.

Agreed Gabriel it will work for every parallel printer that is of deskjet specification - it is what HP will have you try to discern between printer faults and software faults... but I haven't tried it with a usb printer.
