Zone alarm 3.x cannot remember Sh**
Having a problem with the latest zonealarm (free version) and windows xp.
Only one user, administrative rights, but zonealarm does not retain the settings i tell it.
No knowledgebase on zonelabs site, so i cannot search there.
It will not remember the applications i tell it are ok, and even though i tell it to let me configure applications as they try to access the interent, it keeps going back to autoconfiguration.
Anyone have any ideas?
Windows XP Pro, SP1 (slipstream install) and all the latest hotfixes. I do not have Windows media player 9 beta installed, which has compatibility issues with zonealarm.
Thanks in advance...

I know I will get flamed for saying this...since I know a lot of WD members seems to like ZoneAlarm...but get rid of it! I have had problems with it also...especially on networked PCs.
Plus, you probably don't need it anyway.
Just my two cents...

What are you using for an antivirus program?..So far, the only time customers have reported issues to us on the new zonealarm was when there was already a trojan present on the system..I've been using it with windows xp and sp1 (not slipstreamed, however) on four systems here and about 20 user systems with no problems..I think the first thing I would do would be to run an online virus check, and run sfc on the xp installation (btw, there are reports about zone alarm not responding properly after norton personal firewall was installed and then removed prior to za installation)

It should also be installed as "all users" rather than just the admin. However, this could be the ever helpful system restore on XP setting it back - it does that with my nero overburn parameters from time to time
Also do you have xp's own firewall disabled?
Are you on a network? If so, workgroup or domain?
What type of internet connection do you have?

Im using norton 2002, antivirus only, no viruses or trojans, allready chekced that one.
As for not needing it, the reason i installed it is that I was getting a lot of network activity with just the windows xp firewall enabled.
I do not have the windows firewall enabled anymore since using this, but DID test the windows firewall by leaving it enabled at first-- a lot of stuff got thru to zonealarm.
Not on a network.
Internet connection is cable modem with an IP that changes on the first of the month.
Hope this additional info helps.

Update from the ZAP PRO readme:
c. There have been limited cases where ZoneAlarm Pro will forget a user's program settings. This may be a sign of corrupt settings. The best way to fix corrupt settings is to reinstall ZoneAlarm Pro, choosing the "Clean Install" option.
