Win 98 Minimized Window Problem
A customer called about one of their Compaq PC's that is having an issue. The issue is when they try and minimize a program the program is minimized doesn't show up on the task bar. If you do an ALT-TAB you can see the program and go back into it. Has anyone seen this?
Thanks

Interesting! I have a 95 PC that has that same problem. It started yesterday, but I just found out about it moments ago. Let's keep each other posted on this one...
I am going to scan for virus's first...I suggest you do the same…

Had this once a long time ago...
Seem to remember it was cured by unchecking or checking any and all stuff to do with the task bar - eg quick launch... Whatever wasnt checked got checked and vice versa. Rebooted and then put it back and rebooted and problem went away...

Got IT
I managed to find the problem on the system here. An app running in task manager, OTMS and Winsrvc, ended task on them (forgot which order), and right away things went back to normal. I then removed the offending program (which also has a registry reference in the run string for "winsrvc" ), ran a File-Find and discovered the program directory. All of these paths are gone now, so I couldn't give them to you without reinstalling Friend Greetings…
Ask the user if they recently received an email for a greeting card that asked them to install an app. Also look for the OTMS app. in the task manager, if there, end task, you should get your taskbar buttons back for the open windows. The permanent fix is to remove Friend Greetings from Add/remove programs. As for the greetings, tell them that they will have to take that problem up with either Friend Greetings, or Permissioned Media Inc. My user is not permitted to install the app. again.
IE was updated to 5.5 SP2, which is as high as I can go on 95, and no other 95 updates are available. This PC is struggling as it is, and will probably be rebuilt in a few more weeks anyway, so I am washing my hands of this one for now… You may have other update options available if you wanted to get this running correctly for them, or just remove that crapware! I also ran AdAware on the PC once everything was done, only found some cookies to delete…
If this wasn’t your same problem, let us know…
