Scanner Recommendations and what not...
Looking for a good/great scanner that will also scan negatives and slides. My grandmother is doing her Geneology stuff and some of the only pictures she can find are negatives and slides.
Any recommendations?

I am an advocate of HP scanners, I have the 5300 and it is the best I've ever had,
I had a 4470, but it was horrible..
I haven't tried the new 5000, 6000, or 7000 series, hopefully they're better than the 4000.
My best combo would be the HP c20 Photosmart scanner($500) it does pictures, slides and negatives really well, and the 5300 (if you can find one) for the larger pictures etc...

The Epsons are a pain, and a resource hog with the smart panel always running in the background. If you don't have an Epson printer then they really want to choke.

How do you think the Chiefs look this year? I am a life long Chiefs fan.
If its not broke, then upgrade anyways!

Go here to check HP's scanners:
<a href="http://www.shopping.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpdirect/shopping/scripts/home/which_home.jsp" target="_blank">HPShopping.com</a> Select Scanners.
Lots of good info there for you. Let us know which way you end up going and how it works out for you...Good Luck!

And, for some good price comparisons, don't forget about good ol' <a href="http://www.pricewatch.com/" target="_blank">PRICE WATCH ®</a>. Click on Scanners...then maybe Slide for instance...

I don't have a lot of scanner expertise, but I've got a cheap parallel HP 3200c and haven't had a single problem with it. Just my 2 cents

Yep, i'll add my name to the list of HP converts. I have a 4100c and while it won't do slides and negatives, and so is no good for you, i'm personally very happy with it (especially seeing as i got it for free, but thats another story!). I'll also say steer well clear of Umax...they really are the pits...

Well I think it is unanimous then. I was going to go HP anyways unless someone had a great Non HP machine to try but I guess one doesnt exist.
Dont worry, I hate UMAX, I used (and say this with some dgree of shame) be a head tech at a Best Buy in Phoenix and man those things sucked. Granted, there were promos where you would basically get a UMAX scanner for like $9 after rebate but still.
It is actually for my grandmother and she will buy what I tell her so I will let you all know how we turn out.
If its not broke, then upgrade anyways!

I am a reader of Smart Computing. It is a pretty good magazine, but they recommended Canon Multipas 50 as the best product. I have had nothing but problems with the scanner. Plus, you have to pay long distant to get tech support which becomes very costly when you have to wait for it.My mother bought a top line Epson and has nothing but troubles with it. I have an old HP 512C. It is old, but it still works with my new XP computer. It does great scans of photos and student work including cursive and printing. As a result, I would go with HP scanner when I get a new scanner.
