WinXP slow boot ... sometimes...

Running an Athlon 2000+ on an MSI Kt# Ultra MB (Via KT333) and 512MB DDR 333 RAM. Win XP Pro (legal) SP1 installed. All drivers are the most current I can find.

I would say about 1 in every 3 times, it is slow in boting up. We have several logins and there is no delay to getting to the login screen. It is only after I log in. It seems like it might have something to do with the MSN Messenger (which I dont think can be removed) because that will not load at all when the slow boot happens. Also, the 2 network connections (I have them displayed in my tray) hesitate in starting when the problem occurs.

Any ideas?

Also what have you got loading in your profile?

Is the network connections dhcp or static ips?

Messenger can indeed be removed! Here are instructions for doing it manually, as well as a script, that will do it for you. Enjoy

I've seen this problem when XP can't reach a DHCP server or if there is a problem with TCP/IP. The desktop loads, then nothing else seems to happen for some length of time, then the rest of the systray icons appear.

Can you still access the internet when it boots up slow like you're describing? Or do you have to reboot?

In rare cases, I've seen norton, new.net, and some firewalls cause this.

I've removed Messenger (YEAH!). So far so good.

I do not always have prblems with the net on a slow boot although sometimes I do... hopefully that problem is history.

They are not static IP's. They are DHCP.

Will update more when I have gotten more time to continue to test.
