Any last hopes?
OK, I have a hard drive here a Quantum 10 gig.
Problem is it works and I've installed Windows on it, though occasionally it likes to "Freeze" and clicks, etc. However next boot it works fine. I've tried it in multiple machines with multiple IDE cables.
I've heard that a low level format often helps with stuff like this, anyone that can link me to a good low-level format utility, or can give me any ideas, I'd appreciate it. If not, what's 20 bucks for another one, used maybe.
Drive is way out of warranty so RMA is not an option.

Sounds like it is occasionally trying to access data on a bad sector, and the heads get stuck in a loop..you might try using something like spinrite..I've fixed a few drives with similar problems at least long enough to get data off, etc. spinrite is at www.grc.com

Ruslan has mentioned many HDD util's that do LLF's as for the clicking, sounds like a heat or platter issue.
There are a few topics darted about with the same issues (mainly Fujitsu's but I'll not get into that )

I gurss I have never used anything other than what comes from the manufacturer. I agree with the trying to access a bad sector comment but I dont know if I would depend on that thing anymore.

Re: Any last hopes?
All depends on what exactly the model of that Quantum.
If it's Quantum CX or Quantum LCT series drive - it could be problem with electronics - overheating of TDA5247 chip to be exactly... Sometimes additional heatsink to this chip and/or fan can solve the problem, sometimes and LLF is also needed.
There are a lot of specialized LLF utils written especially for repairing Quantums - do the search through my posts, and you'll find the links... or I can e-mail them to you...
But as I have said, all depends on what exactly the model of the drive - another models can have another problems...

Yep it's a Quantum CX model, and I see that chip right there. I just LLFed the drive with a program called Zero Disk-- so far it works but I need to use it over the long term, and I'll see what happens.
Do you think sticking a fan right under the drive might help?

It may well help, but for how long is the big question, if you need to use the drive over long term. I would invest in a fully working drive and use this one for "non-escential" work / files. And see how it goes from there, there's nothing worse than your drive dying before you get a chance to back it up.. trust me, I know.
Keep the drive close to a good air supply, and monitor the temperature closely.
I'm sure Ruslan will be able to give you more info than I can.
Good Luck.

I searched for MHDD on the forums but only found one link and it was dead. Could you link me to where I could DL that? Thanks
Yeah, I won't be storing any critical data on this drive...
