need advice

Ok, how does the rest of the tech community deal with someone who likes to "brag" about their working background. What I mean is someone who kinda lets you know that they are better than others, absolutley knows what their talking about because they have been in a particular field for so long, and is defiant because they "know it all". It really irks me when people especially tell you what you know before you have a chance to explain your side of things. I am just wondering how others would deal with a co-worker who acts like this. TIA!

Depending on your professional relationship with this person, I'd choose one of the following:

• Smack upside the head.
• Practical joke (computer related) with which the person will struggle and learn either (a) humility or (b) proper respect for the skills of others regardless of age or experience.
• Polite, private discussion on why they act like they are threatened by you or your abilities.

Any good?

Easy,

Since they 'know it all' why don't you give your co-worker more work.

You could also make a special point of pointing out their mistakes.

Unless someone else has been making an awful lot of mistakes there is no reason for this other than a very weak ego. People I know who are MD's and Ph.D. like to conceal that fact. They don't like to point it out because it impedes social discourse (people become intimidated).

This person brags about his background so you will KNOW he is smarter than you. Its the only way he can do it because in reality - he ISN"T"

Good Luck,

I would just ignore his stupid a$$,and only talk to him if you need to and short and to the point only, then go back to what you were doing,it sounds like he can do you no good at all!
just ignore him.

and like was said,go ahead and let more work go his way, enjoy it!

Once, while working as a retail bench tech, with too much excp.. (later story) My boss though it needed a service manager.
So he hires some dumb*** that's got like 1 year tech experience, but he's got age and more prof. experience then me.
So everytime i get a complicated job that he needs to know about, this sorry dude tries to tell me how to troubleshoot a problem.

All i ever did was nod, say "yeah, i already did that" thanks for nothing dude.

I think after four years doing day to day bench tech stuff, you pretty much have dealt with almost every different situation.

Maybe..

Yeah let him take as much of the work as possible and watch him screw up. If he asks for help tell him you thought with his background he could handle it. Tell any bosses the same thing. They should eventually catch on. If not talk to the boss.. When this happened to me I was the supervisor so I talked to the manager and he didn't last long.... ( didn't hurt that he was bad mouthing the manager right to the manager's sons face! )
