    Need a gadget...

I need something to tell me if a network port is live or not, must be cheap, and preferably pocket-sized. Don't mind if I have to build it myself.

    Any suggestions?

Ummmm what kind of port are you talking about? The actual physical port on like a hub or switch or are you talking about the thousands of ports that make networking work? If it's the latter check out angry ip scanner. It's kinda kool. It scans a range of ip address (your choosing) and you can also give it a range of ports to scan.

    Forgot I'd posted this.

Physical, Cat 5, port. The whole place is flood wired, but I need to know which one's are actually live (without going patch panel hunting).

    Thanks.

Well, you can use a laptop, see if there is activity or not..

Otherwise, i'd got with a simple tester, one that just checks the integraty of the wire (they are fairly cheap) get a buddy on a waky talky at the patch panels, and go to town..

an LED accross wires 1&2 or 3&6 may give some indication to activity, but can't say for sure..

Thought about a laptop, too bulky. Normal testers out as well, can do without crawling up the patches (not easy to get to in most of this place). I'll give the LED a try...
