    AOL and Windows XP

    Hi guys - it's been a while since I've posted.
    My National Guard unit was deployed to Indiana, so now I've been doing "tech support" for my local laptop buddies here rather than playing network god at work back home. Oh well 3 months down, 9 to go!

    I've got a pal with a Toshiba laptop with Windows XP. He's been a "faithful" but misled AOL user in the past, with no problems. Recently he got a new free CD with a new version of AOL on it and he installed it OVER the previous version of AOL 6.0. Then it came up saying there was no modem detected or installed. So I told him to uninstall AOL and reinstall it from scratch. He did that, and now he has the same problems. Still says No modem detected. Even if he uninstalled AOL completely, Windows does not detect the modem. My prior experience tells me that AOL is still the problem here, and that his modem is physically ok. However, I don't know where to rip it out of the registry and he won't let me wipe the drive to reload it.

    Anyone got any ideas? Would really appreciate the help!

    I'm not very familiar with AOL.
    I stay away from it.

    One thing you could try is the system restore.
    Winxp just like Winme comes with a built in system restore function.
    Try restoring to a date just before he tried to install the AOL upgrade overtop.

    If that doesn't work, maybe this link might help.

    If that doesn't work, you can backup the registry and do a search for aol using regedit, as long as you have administrative privilages, and delete any revelant registry key related to aol and see from there.

    There are more knowledgeable people than me in these forums. I'm pretty sure they will have the exact answer for you. Good luck.

    Yes... backup the reg and the search for AOL - delete each entry.

    What does the device manager say? It may be just a question of uninstalling DUN and reinstalling it again.

    You might have done this, but if not, go into Network Connections and delete any connections dealing with AOL (new ones will grow back when you re-install AOL.)

    It's been quite a few years since I have dealt with AOL, but doing that along with the wiping all references to AOL, including registry ought to do the trick. RegCleaner is a really good tool for this.
