Try putting it into the freezer. Freezing the whole assembly may harden the adhesive, making it easier to remove the chip. I mean it's useless now anyway, no harm in trying.

Not a bad idea mate.
I'll give it a go.

Sounds like a warranty claim to me.

Just a theory, but you could also try a hair dryer on max heat and blow it inbetween the cpu and heatsink. That may warm the adhesive enough to become soft enough to pull apart.

Normally that would be a good idea. Unfortunately it was a freebie from Intel. I don't think they'd appreciate us demanding a replacement.
Periodically they send us kit to develop on.

Hair dryer sounds a bit risky but it is shafted anyway so I suppose if all else fails I could give it a try. Next issue, the only hair dryers at work are in the girls toilet. If my next post has mention of a black eye and a disciplinary you'll know why.

I've had this happen many times with thermaltake hsf, they seem like they are stuck tighter than sh!t, but all ya have to do is use a knife or a razor blade at an angle and they come off after you've just started scraping. Trust me, I do it quite often and it works like a charm. Just be sure to have it close to a table or something because they come off very quickly
