Question SCSI help needed; How to configure Western Digital WDE18300 18.3 GB (Easy SCSI Q)

I am finally getting around to building my new system. It will be an AMD Athlon XP1700 on an ECS K7S5A with 512mb DDR. I'll be installing Windows XP Pro & apps on the SCSI drive & data will be on a 40GB IDE drive jumpered as slave on the primary channel with a TDK CD-RW as master on the secondary channel.

I got a Western Digital WDE18300 18.3 GB - Ultra2 LVD 1700 RPM SCSI drive on Agora. I am using an Adaptec 2940 U\W Controller. When I first booted & went into the SCSI utility it showed the drive at ID 8 & wanted to configure it as drive "D". I went to Western Digital’s web site & found that on the jumper block no jumper on the SCSI ID Jumper Section is SCSI ID "O". It was already configured as SCSI ID "O" (no jumper) but on the "option pins" it had the only jumper over pins marked "D TRGT INIT".

My question is why was it coming up as SCSI ID8 rather than "0" if there was no jumper covering pins in the SCSI ID section & what set of pins in the Options section should the single supplied jumper be covering?

    Thanks!

Have you set up the adaptec card? This is done by going into the card setup program by pressing control/A...you need to set it to a boot device.. here is a pdf link from adaptec on this.:

Yes, I configured the card. The drive is recognized at ID8. One other thing, the SCSI cable I got with the drive has what looks like a terminator in the end connector. Do I need this?

    Thanks for the link!

Yes..unless your drive documentation says that it autoterminates, you need to terminate the scsi cable..some devices contain their own terminator

    I think it auto terminates.

Another question; What are the jumpers on the other end of the drive? There are 6 pairs of pins between the pwr connector & the SCSI connector similar to an IDE drive there is a jumper over what I think would be 5-6. There is no reference to these jumpers on the label on the drive, or under the specs for the drive on the WD web site.

that is the remote option block..you can find info about it here:
    http://support.wdc.com/techinfo/general/jumpers.asp
but i don't think you need to use it. According to this page, you should have no jumpers on your drive for it to act as drive 0

Yep, that's the page I was on. I had no jumper on the SCSI ID jumper section, but it still came up SCSI ID8. It doesn't say which jumper to use in the Options section. I think I'll try no jumper at all.

I removed all jumpers, including the jumper block between the power connection & scsi connector. It is now ID0, but it still comes up drive "D" on the Adaptec Controller.

I still think I should have a jumper on one of the option positions. Also, I would like to store the jumpers for future use. There must be a "parking" position.

I would try it and see if it works..if it does, you can sometimes use pins that are listed as reserved for jumper storage, or alternately just attach the jumper to one of the pins

It's working just fine. I was just being a little picky. I would like the boot drive to be "C:", not "D:". XP could care less. I'm at the disk partitioning & formatting stage of the Windows XP installation now.

I'm not taking any chances. I'm putting the jumpers in one of those tiny ziplock bags they include with new system cases & taping it to the drive!

    Thanks for your help!

It's going to be nice to get off this Celeron 300!
