motherboard --> dead?
working with a computer, dual 1.26ghz p3 -- had just got it (working) into a new case w/ an antec 350w -- shut it down after defining an array, was just about to mount a cd rom and the fans kick on (along with the hd) but only at what seems to be 1/2 power. I flip the switch then unplug the thing and she keeps goin for about another 5-6 seconds (caps discharging???...thats a long time). Plug it back in, nothing. I've reset the bios a 1000x, tried my antec 400w power that I got here at home ...nothing works
Everything as of now is out of the motherboard and she's sittin on my desk (no cpus, no mem, no nothin) and it didn't boot.
ideas?

Or CPU(s) ?
Could also be a CPU failure. You'll need at least one CPU installed to even get a beep error code but nothing else, no memory, cards or drives. I don't have personal experience of any dual boards but i think if only one CPU is installed you need a dummy in the second slot. Can you test the CPU's seperately in another system? If CPU's are ok, then yes, motherboard is buggered. I would take a careful look at the Antec 350w PSU too...perhaps a PSU fault caused this in the first place?

Yea the cpu's checked out ok and trying to run it with 1 cpu or no cpus with no luck -- but this is a socket board, no repeater cards on this 'un.
I'm also testing the ps against my 400w antec (which i know is good) right now as a matter o fact

I have seen cpu's work on one baord fine (I'm talking 48 hour burn cycles on 3dmark or Q3) and flat lining on another, no beeps no fan spin nothing.
Had this several times with amd's only ever once with intel.
the point is if the other board you tested the cpus on was a diffrent make / type of board dont write the mb off yet. only way to be sure is to thest them cpus on a replacement board with a diffrent psu. (if the board is dead i would not trust the psu again)
all that said it does sound like the board

What you mean saying "no boot" - no power ON at all (no fans spinning) or simply no any beep sounds? Is the PSU itself starting? Did you try to start the PSU itself without motherboard (by shorting "power ON" signal wire to the "ground")?

no power -- if it gave me some life, I'd be happy
the power supplies are good, we used my new motherboard that I got yesterday as a test. Worked just fine.

Most likely it is just only one or two of powerful transistors went south and shorting power... Check them all...
Just few days ago was having similar problems at work with 2 ASUS motherboards... ask someone who has enough skills to do it for you...
In worst case it could be damaged voltage regulator, but usually it be caused by bad PSU...

do you think my electronic engineering degree is enough? I'll look the parts up and check out their numbers ...see if I can't get some kinda data sheet on it so I can test the lil @#$%ers. Be nice if that's all she was...
wonder if it was the case that grounded it somewhere....
