More XP customisation

I've another XP customisation that I'm trying to pull off.

This time I want to try to move the documents and settings folder. Again I think I've seen it done before (though in 2000 not XP)

Anyone know how?

No. The documents and settings folders are where 2K and XP store all the users profiles and settings. It's not easy to shift.
I've fudged it but I've not got it right yet.

In docs and settings are two tricky folders to move. They have numerous registry entries. Local service and network service, you can't copy them while in windows as files are in use.

I pointed them to another location and it was possible to move them. I'm not convinced that I've got a stable set up yet though so I won't use it until I know it's right.

Sorry, I didn't read your post correctly.

take a look in the registry here: "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ ProfileList" . Change ProfilesDirectory value.

I think you will have to go into the GUID for each user that already exists in the profileList, and change the location there as well. I would be interested to see how new users logging in would be treated...Let us know if this helps...

I can't seem to get the Registry path to display without wraping the text. You get what I mean though...

Use the group policy editor in winxp and 2k. You can specify where you want them to go and windows will even move them for you. It is in the user settings in folder redirection. I have done this for my main computer to my server. My docs, settings, desktop etc, is available on every machine I own now. If you don't have a domain simply use the local group policy and specify a diffrent location.

I actually thought about gpedit. But it seems that it would only will permit certain folders be redirected, and not the entire Documents and Settings folder. Also, I don't see in the local gpedit.msc where you can redirect things without a GP object from Active Directory, am I missing something...?

Odd, it shows in the win2k machines but not xp machine. I will have to see if i can find out how to make it work locally.

Have any of these PC's been a part of an Active Directory, and been assigned a GPO? If so, that is why you see it...

Ive moved both the Program Files and Personal "My Documents" folder for my profile to another partition using TWEAKUI off of a Win98 CD.

Works like a charm..

I also read somewhere that people were using the old version of TWEAKUI to enable WinXP Home Edition to log onto a network by using the automatic login feature. Apparently they have removed this in the new version to keep people from doing this.

Doh... guess I need to read all the posts... didnt realize you were moving the WHOLE Documents and Settings folder...

Think Ill give it a try w/GPEDIT and see how that works too.

Just got on and saw the post. It is not hard to change the My Documents in XP or 2000 (or 98). Maybe someone has already mentioned this. Just right click the My Documents icon from the desktop and click on Properties. From there, click on Move and browse to a new directory, or type it in. Each user can have a different location by doing the same when they are logged in. Then, while in any Office program, when you open or save a document, it will automatically go to the new directory. Hope this helps.
