    Cool ADSL Setup

For some time now I have tried to setup my ADSL connection on my main computer(WinXP Pro, 3 x 512 Mb RAM, 2 x 40 Gb HDD, etc.,etc. to no avail.
I am using an Alcatel Speed Touch USB modem but I have lost count of the times that my system has crashed requiring the formatting of drive C. and re-installation of my OS.
I have also tried the alternative of invoking the Recovery Console but must confess that I have little idea of what to do when faced the the C:\windows interface that comes up.
I suspect that the driver may be at fault but I am using the software recommended by my ISP.
Is there someone out there using the same modem with Win XP Pro who can direct me to the precise modem driver I should use, assuming that is the problem?

You didn't mention your isp But here is the driver I use on Windows 2000 and windows xp - seems to be stable for me.

We are talking about the stupid green blob on a usb lead aren't we?

Re-installing the os is somewhat drastic, especially as Winxp has a nice system restore feature that actually works!

    What sort of crashes?

The green frog is renown for or I should say its drivers are for causing "IRQ NOT EQAUL OR LESS" blue screen errors especially with via motherboards I gave up on mine and purchased an ADLS router from dabs and all blue screens vanished just like that.
Reinstalling is a bit extreme as a reboot usually fixed the problem and never went to the extreme of causing total system failure it was more of a nuisance to have it crash half way through my workload.
Perhaps you could be more explicite as to the errors your getting causing you to reinstall as it could be unrelated to the modem?

Yes, it is the stupid green blob you described. I agree that re-installing is a drastic action but I have been forced into it because the" Last known configuration" option doesn't function, nor does attempting to enter safe mode so am unable to access System Restore. The crashes usually take the form of the mouse seizing up, ctr + alt + del not working, necessitating using my favourite button (or most useful one anyway), the reset.
On restart, after the Post, I get a message that some file or other in Windows\System32 is corrupt or missing. I have an idea that the whole of the folder is wiped out in fact.
Thanks very much for your prompt reply and for the location of the recommended driver file. Sometime over the next week or so I will give it a go and will let you know how I got on. Merry Christmas to you and thanks once again.

Do you have a via chipset?
Have you installed the latest 4 in 1's?
Is there an irq for usb assigned in bios?
Is the usb irq being shared and with what?

Sounds like you have a problem with basic configuration.

Yes, I do have a VIA chipset and I have downloaded and installed the 4.43 latest version with good results. The Alcatel driver, however, appeared to be configured to a UK ISP which was not much good to me. You were not to know my location( Perth, Western Australia) because of my Hotmail address.
As it happened your driver was version 140.2R and my ISP has now provided me with version 140.3R, presumably an update.
Thank you once agaian for your efforts - Happy New Year!
