Error 1513: Bad Attribute Position
I am having problems in merging some free space into my D partition. I have a 30 GB drive which DID have 3 partitions:
· C Fat32 5 GB
· D NTFS 12 GB
· E NTFS 11 GB
I deleted the E partition and tried to reallocate the free space using Partition Magic 7.0. But, I continually receive the error message:
Error 1513: Bad Attribute Position in File Record
I ran Checkdisk with the “r” switch but this did not solve the problem. I tried to merge D and E by recreating the E NTFS partition and using the “Merge Partitions” command from within Partition Magic but still receive the same error message. Running a disk scan with Norton System Works mentions a security descriptor problem but will not fix the problem during a reboot as it claims.
How can I get this free space, about 11GB, to the D partition? I am about to the point of simply making a current backup and formatting the disk as Windows 98 is in the C partition and I have not booted into Windows 98 in months.
I am running Windows XP Home Edition.
Thanks for the help,
Jeff

Sounds like you may need to update the master boot record.
use the the repair console in xp (boot from cd) and when you access it, type in Fixmbr, when thats finished, type in fixboot. Yes it will throw up all kinds of horror messages... it will be fine. (or should be )

Thanks NooNoo for the suggestion. I installed the Recovery Console as a startup option in the boot menu and proceeded with your suggestion BUT still have the same problem. do you have any more suggestions? It may be easier to format/reinstall but I like to try fixing problems rather than erassing them. But, I could have formatted/reinstalled in the time I have spent piddling with this error message.
Thanks Again for the Help,
Jeff

Read this faq from powerquest
But if you are out of time then cut your losses now... zero fill the damn thing to overwrite old partition information, then boot from the xp cd and get it to create the partitions you want.
