New CD-ROM Stil Has "Skips" on Audio CDs

I have both a CDRW {Artec} and a CD-ROM {Sony}. I just installed both of these today. My main reason for buying the Sony CD-Rom was that my old CD player seemed to have “skips” when playing music CDs. It sounded just like scratches in the old LPs. But now, my new one does the same thing. My new CDRW does NOT do this nor did the old one. I am running Windows XP Home edition. Both devices plug into onboard audio on my MSI 6340 motherboard. There are three plugs in the same vicinity, with one being for CD-ROM Audio connector, one for DVD add-on card with Line In connector, and the last is for a modem with internal voice connector. I have the Sony CD-ROM plugged into the jack for the CD-ROM audio and the CDRW plugged into the jack for DVD Add-on card. Both devices are on the same IDE controller. I could simply swap the plugs around {?} but I need good quality music in BOTH to copy music CDs.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

Start Windows Media Player, Tools Menu, Options, Devices, look at the properties for each CD device and play with the options a bit. I find that "Analog" works better for me; that uses the audio cable between your CD and sound card. Digital mode streams the audio in digital format on the IDE cable and I find this interferes with hard disk operations on my work PC. Analog mode uses no CPU processing time whatsoever.
