Ping Rate and MechWarrior 4 Online

    Hi Gang,

I am playing MechWarior 4 online. I am using a 56k modem. When I am choosing a server to sign on to, I notice a ping rate number next to each server listing.

What does this mean? Should I be signing on to a server with a high ping number or a low ping number? does it make a difference.

    Thanks,
    Orangeman

A ping is a packet sent which returns how long it took for the packet to reach it's destination. You can start, run, cmd, tracert and see each node on the way get pinged.

Was it a ping rate or a ping time? The lower the ping time, the faster you communicate. Several things affect the ping time... see your previous post on the subject of mechwarrior.

    Hi NooNoo,

The previous post was about VGA and SVGA monitors that lead to a discussion about ping time. I listed the subject here because I wanted to attract persons who were knowlegable about ping time, not monitors.

Please forgive me if I am in error.

As to ping time vs. ping rate I am really not sure what the answer to your question is. All I am getting is a number next to the word 'ping.' For example

Server Lion's Gate - Under the 'Ping' column it reads 298
Server Dragon's Lair- Under the 'Ping' column it reads 589
Server Foxes' Den - Under the 'Ping' column it reads 1188
    etc.

So I don't know whether I should be seeking smaller or larger numbers. Perhaps according to your answer I should be seeking the larger and faster numbers for my 56k?

    Thanks very much,
    Orangeman

NO, you posting here is fine, I meant refer to the explanation about lag....

The smaller the ping time, the faster the connect.

A rate is the number of pings over a given period.... the gamers will correct me here I am sure, but I believe it is the ping time you are looking at.

Anyone with a faster ping time (smaller number) than you will automatically have the edge because they can communicate faster with with server.

Ping is the measurment of time it takes for data to make it from you to a particular server, it is measured in miliseconds. Naturally, the higher the number, the more time it takes.
