    Cool Windows Updates Thanks Page?

I'll set it up first and then give you all the problem.

    Dell Dimension L800cxe
Windows Millenium (Arrrggg!!! I know, I know!)

Brought in for repair with an explanation of "locking up and internet connectivity problems". I've figured out the problems they were having, but now I have a different problem. One of the things we do with all machines that come in is to do the Windows Updates before the customers get their machines back. On this machine, when I try to access Windows Update (doesn't matter how I try to get there), I get redirected to a "Thanks for your interest in Windows Update" page (which is the Windows Update URL with /en/thanks.asp added on).

Normally it wouldn't bother me, but I just got another machine in (a built computer) with Windows 98SE that is doing the same thing. "Thanks for your interest in Windows Update". Has anyone ever seen this before? I have been unsuccessful in finding a resolution to this anywhere (even on Microsoft's Knowledge Base). Please help me before I lose what little hair I have left.

I found this someplace?? but you can give it a try. Sounds logical to me

If you are not on a corporate local area network (LAN), you have arrived at this page for one or more of the following reasons: ActiveX controls are disabled in Internet Explorer Security. To resolve this issue, make sure that ActiveX controls are enabled by setting Internet Explorer security to medium. For more information, read Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article Q193385. Files that are necessary to the operation of this Web site are missing or have not been registered. For more information, read Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article Q283288. Third party applications such as anti-virus software or firewalls might have prevented your computer from downloading the proper controls. To check for conflicting third party applications, read Microsoft KB Article Q241234.

Heres some more I found at www.annoyances.org

If you're using Windows 98 Second Edition, and get a message that says "Thank you for your interest in Windows Update" instead of the Windows Update page when you use the Windows Update link in the Start Menu:

This is due to a problem with the stupid Internet Connection Wizard.
To work around this (temporarily), you'll have to open Internet Explorer (not Netscape) manually, and go to http://www.windowsupdate.com
To fix this permanently, follow the steps to Disable the Internet Connection Wizard.

    http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-005

This tells you how to disable ICW

    Good luck!

    Cool

Google and Microsoft Knowledge Base are my first line of defense (other than what little knowledge I contain in my head). I had tried everything that you have posted. Unfortunately, most of the stuff is irrelevant as they refer to things that either aren't there or don't apply. I appreciate your effort, though. Still no solution, but many thanks. Looks like Microsoft phone support (ugghh!) for me in the morning.

    Cool

Update: Still haven't found a fix after talking to Microsoft phone support for 3 hours (morons had me doing the same things I already tried...person was located in India no less!!!). Thick Indian accent aside, the support person sent me an e-mail support option, so I'll see how that goes.

Unfortunately now I have 3 computers exhibiting the same problem. Has anyone ever heard of this Xupiter thing that's been going around? Talk about a pain in the rear. I can't verify if Xupiter is the problem or not. I know that I uninstalled (reg-hack) it from at least one of the computers, but I don't remember if I had from the other two.

If and when I figure this out, I'll post it here.
