    slix mini system problem

just built a pc for a friens and since space was an issue went for a creative slix bare bones (case, motherboard and heap pipe/radiator).##all seemed fine for the first 3 weeks then suddenly today a problem arose..

post detects cpu and memory fine.... detects the harddrive but when it tries to detect the cdrw all that appears are a couple of symbols and then a few lines dowb a couiple more.. random characters...

restarted entered setup checked standard cmos setup for ide channels and there appears instead of the cdrws id a couple of flashing letters (lv)..
disabled the device restarted and then the pc freezes wether i choose to boot in safe mode or normally???

unplugged the cdrw and tried again same thing pc freezes .
i havent yet had a chance to test the individual componenets...

    any ideas?????

no new hardware has been added or changed.

i have seen garbled ide drive idents before on post.. dodgy hot wap racks... damaged drives etc.. but since the pc now fails to boot even in the absence of the cdrw???
maybe the bois chips data has been corrupted somehow?? maybe the controller chip is dodgey?? maybe the harddrives gone??......

this problem needs to be sorted as soon as possible but unfortunately until tommorow i have no monitor to test the system and its individual parts....

    please help..

    system setup is as foollows...
slix barebone pc case and motherboard
    celeron 1700
    384meg ddr2100 crucial
    asus gf4 ti4400
    onboard sound enabled
    liteon 48x cdrw
    60gig 120gxp ibm deskstar
    E R R O R...

Start with memory - try another stick of memory...

& of course make sure you clear CMOS with the jumper/battery out trick ...

Other thought is some kind of boot virus....
