Hard Drive Brand Poll
In an attempt to boil THIS THREAD down into some digestible information, I combed it for all references to hard drive manufacturers and types so a poll could be made.
Please post your answers with an emphasis on the drive's reliability; other factors like price/speed/etc. don't have to be ignored completely, but are secondary to that.

Maxtor, Western Digital and Seagate are the only drives i will touch now. WD are the best of the bunch in my experience.
I have found Fujitsu drives to be OK but some recent bad press and disclosures of faulty drives has put me off.
IBM will never get a look from me again after we had problems with the DeskStar disks, sent many of them back! As you say they dont make them anymore Hitachi do, but ill still be cautious with them.

my personal favs are IBM and Seagate. i don't like WD or Maxtor, i've just had bad luck with them. i've just started using some samsung drives and i'm pretty happy with them (although i don't like the way thier drive jumpers are set up)
i had very few problems with the old Fujitsu drives, but i think the they are gone now, is that right?

Maxtor bought Quantum and discovered Quantum's drives were superior to their own, so they basically just slapped their name on Quantum's stuff and kept making it.
I echo everything that confus-ed said, and I'd like to add that people that are searching for the most reliable or bulletproof hard drive are only fooling themselves and frankly wasting their time. Hard drives are mechanical devices and are subject to failure. Are hard drives less reliable than they were in the past? Perhaps, but that can only be because of consumer's desire for faster, bigger, cheaper drives.
I pity the fool who don't back up his data! I don't pity the fool who didn't back up his data and LOST IT.

Yeah, I had to pick other just to see what the poll stats were.
I had a gorgeous promotional poster of an exposed Seagate drive; it had some colors reflecting off of it that just knocked me out. I had it on the back of the garage door for a spell, but it got ripped off one day. I stopped buying their drives soon after that. If it can't stay on my door, it can't be reliable enough for my pc's...I had to draw the line somewhere.
