DNS error

hi, i'm running win 98se and when i try to hook up my computer to road runner i keep getting DNS errors. i'm able to ping my local host's ip address but am unable to ping it when i type in the regular address. some people tell me i have registry problems. reinstalling windows is not an option for me. does anyone know of any registry fixes that will resolve this DNS error?

Try the following

Boot to safe mode

control panel, add/remove programs, windows setup, communications, uncheck everything in there.

still in safe mode

control panel, system, device manager tab, remove the network cards and the dialup adapters.

still in safemode

control panel, network, remove all protocols, file and printer sharing, clients for ms networks or other clients, dialup adapters and anything else you find there.

Between these steps it is not necessary to reboot when it asks.

Shutdown, restart... go to normal mode.

Reinstall your network interface card.
Go to control panel, add/remove programs, windows setup, communications, just tick dialup networking, nothing esle!
ok that, reboot.

Normal mode, control panel network, add client for ms networks, tcp/ip and file and printer sharing (only if you are on a network - do not add this if you just have a cablemodem connection) Depending on how you like to login to your machine, select client for ms networks or windows login... (windows login produces no login dialogue box after the first entry with no password is ok'd). Reboot.

This whole routine has the effect of sorting out tcp/ip and winsock which are usually the source of dns errors that you are describing.

"But I have a cable modem" I hear you cry, "Why do I need dialup adapter?" - for some reason if you have 98 and you dont install dialup networking, winsock screws up.

Oh, you will need the 98 cd, or point to your cab files if they are preloaded.

I have had the same problem before and resolved it just by removing the network adapters in device manage and reinstalling them. Did you have AOHell before?

ok, i did this and it still wont work. when i hook the computer up to the router the lights on the router turn on, but when i run the router software it says unable to connect to router. i have also tried hooking this computer straight into the cable modem and it still wont work. my suspicion is that these files i'm reinstalling are not being refreshed, but i dont know how to reinstall them manually. any help would be appreciated.

ok i renamed all those files like that site told me. now i'm having problems extracting the files from the cd. this is what i have been doing: 1) start computer with startup disk 2)select start computer with cd rom support 3) at the A:\ prompt i type extract d:\cabs\win98_40.cab rasapi32.dll /l c:\windows\system (i have cab files saved to a burned cd). i keep getting 'ERROR: cannot open file.' does anyone know how to extract cabs from a cd to the hard drive? any help would be appreciated.

well, it looks like i don't need to know that anymore. i decided to restore the files using the system file checker. i hope it doesn't make a difference...

ok, i did everything you told me to do noonoo and i'm still getting dns errors when i open IE. also, when i try to run the linksys router software it is unable to connect even though the lights are on. i am getting really desparate. help me please!

What happens if you directly connect your pc to roadrunner and take the router out of the equation for the time being?

If it works then your router has a problem.

well, before it wouldn't work then either, but time warner finnally called me back and they walked me through fixing it. basically he had me go into the registry and delete the winsock files, then reinstall TCP/IP. it works perfectly now!
