Howto remove Instalation Residue

I'm not quite sure how to word this...

Eveytime Win98 boots, I see the messages as if
I just installed something... Can't remember
what they are off-hand but I think you've seen
them before. You see them in DOS mode like:

Continuing to update windows, please wait...

Something like that. You get this kind of message
if you had to reboot to continue an installation
of something.

Now, this is not causing a problem per-se, but
I should be able to get rid of this somehow.

Anyone know about this?

What is it trying to update exactly???

Sometimes it is necessary to let it complete the job. That may have happened from a faulty download or something interrupted it.

Try running msconfig under the run prompt, you can find it in the start menu, and uncheckmark anything relating to windows update under the startup.

Let me re-phrase this... I have no clue which
installation program did this.

When I boot up my Win98 computer, before I get to
the desktop, right after my autoexec.bat loads,
still in DOS mode, I see this message:

Please wait while Setup updates your configuration files.

This may take a few minutes.

...

Completed updating files, continuing to load Windows...


So that is the message, how do I get rid of it?

I was told that when Setup needs to replace
system libraries which are in use by the OS, it
puts them in some special folder. That way, when
Windows boots up, it knows to replace the files
in that folder.

I just need to know what this process is so I can
straightn things out.

msconfig does not hold the answer to this.

okay, you mention it happens just after autoexec.bat just loads and before entering win98.

Run sysedit in the run screen and it will display all the info your system.ini, win.ini, config.sys, autoexec.bat files.

Look at what is in your autoexec.bat file. Is there anything out of the ordinary there? What I mean by that does it look like there was something there that wasn't the last time you checked your autoexec.bat file.

If you are not sure, then copy all your autoexec.bat lines and paste them here for the others and I to read it over. It might give us a better idea. Thanks.

Also look in the win.ini and system.ini for run= or load=

You might also try performing a Start/Shutdown/Restart. This should clear up any configurations that need to be done. Once this finishes, then Shutdown and Power back up. Hopefully, your prob went away.
