Defect found in Gainward GeForce Ti 4200 based cards
Here's the scoop...
Now I know why my newly built system has been plagued by mysterious crashes.
I just wish they would have found this out before I RMA'd my motherboard and RAM!

Actually it's not the actual defect that's going to give them a black eye, it's how they're handling the RMA's that's going to drive formally loyal customers to other manufacturers. Check out this thread on another forum.
It's a long one, so for those that don't want to comb through it all, I'll give you the Reader's Digest version. People were getting defective boards in return for the RMA'd boards they sent in. Often more than once. Some sent theirs in two, three, or even four times before they finally gave up. People were sending in 128MB boards and getting 64MB boards back. Others were sending in Golden Samples (boards with hand-picked components and guaranteed to overclock) and getting generic boards sent back to them.
This is turning out to be a PR nightmare for Gainward. Given the dog-eat-dog nature of the video card business it will be interesting to see if they can weather the storm and fully recover from this.
As for myself, it will probably be a while before I can use or recommend their products with 100% confidence again.
