I have never seen anything like that. I have seen the "barely legal" stuff, and wondered, but never anything that was indisputably a child. I would definitely call the police, but I would make a deal with them. I would want to be there when they made the arrest. I would want 2 minutes of dialog with the dude to ask him what kind of person he thought I was to sit idly by while he offered me a chance to bust his a$$!

Its one thing to bust a customer for kiddie porn where the act and the porn are both illegal in all 50 states and around the world. But what about gay or lezzie porn, or SM porn, or transvestite porn - that is illegal in only some states and some countries.

Lets say you live in an area where such stuff is illegal. Do you turn 'em in?

Workin at the store I used to work at, this like german biker guy would come in. Strong accent and all. He had all kinds of animal/kiddie porn. We didnt call the police, we nick named him pornholio and laughed at the sick ****. And he would come in tryin to get free service. I would tell him to setup the computer on one of the bench's on the desk, ask him for a boot disk (he hands me this disk thats been wroten over so much and **** with girls names and stuff). And I format his computer an start over. He hated it when I did that. He knew not to ask me to fix his computer when he came in or he'd walk him with a fresh format. I wasnt about to mess around with someone who wants free service from a salesmen on commision.
i got all kinds of shiiiiiiiii to yap about.

Ok I own a small computer company and the policy that I use is simple. "The technician is NOT a policeman". If a Tech brings an Issue to me I will return the computer to the customer with a note stating "Fault not fixed, Objectional Material on Computer"

I do not report it to the police, However if a warrant was served by the Police (Internal Affairs where I am) I would provide a copy of the invoice, the check and customer address and would release the Tech on pay to allow him to testify if needed.

Before you Jump on your high horse - When a car goes past you at 60 Mph in a 55 area do you call the police?

When you see some one drunk and sitting in the gutter do you call the police?

When you get spam email about a new russian teen site do you call the police?

I employ techs to fix computers - Not to make moral, ethical and legal judgments and then take actions on those judgments. If you don't you don't like a customer / data / the enviroment that task puts you in just move on.

I would turn them in if it were blatant kiddie pr0n... there is a lot of borderline stuff out there, like models that are clearly NOT below 18 with teddy bears and lollipops and too much makeup, woohoo, sexy (NOT).

I turned someone in to his mother once for having a pretty brutal video on his machine of a girl begging for her life and then getting her brains shot out. Couldn't tell if it was genuine or not. His mother was very grateful I told her.

For me it's simple. I don't go looking for porn/illegalities on a system when i'm repairing. If during my repairs i see the material, then i would report it to the boss (he's responsible for the actions of the store). it was his choice on reporting it or not. Usualy he would.

I won't look for it, but if i see it? I'll report it.

I REALLY have to differ on you on that topic. I think someone speeding or a drunk on the street can't be lumped together with kiddie-porn and molestation.

I think as human beings we have the duty to protect those who can't protect themselves, especially children.

If I saw something obviously kiddie-porn, the police would be notified immediatly. If I heard screaming and banging in a neighbors apartment, the police would be called. I wouldn't roll over and try to sleep as that went on - and possibly became deadly. I would never be able to live with myself knowing I allowed something like that to continue.

Ok - back off my soap-box.

This has never happened to me, yeah I have seen alot of porn and weird stuff on peoples computers they brought in, but not kiddie porn.

Now a friend of mine ( ]-[otrod who comes on here) told me that the company he worked at found just such a thing.

They had two stores. One in small town and the other in a really small podunk town.

A guy came in with a computer problem and they found out it was a virus that was spread through a .vbs file that appeared as a .jpg file. (I.E. picture.jpg.vbs) so they did a search on all with *.jpg and found a slew of child porn on the computer. They called the cops immediately.

The police dept. was waiting for something like this to happen and made an example out of this guy. Not sure what happened to him, but I am sure he did some hard time.
Its all fun and games until someone loses an eye, then its just fun in the dark.

That is funny. Objectionable material prevented the repairing of your PC...

Anyway, I would think that as a system builder/service provider you would want to take a more active role in this. As someone stated, he would take what he found to his boss, (you), and you stated that you would turn the PC over to the owner untouched. That isn't exactly appropriate.

But then neither is scanning a PC for what could be deemed as personal and confidential information either. If you service PC's for small companies that don't have IT departments, than they deserve the secure feeling knowing that any information on their PC while in service will remain confidential and in tact.

Kiddie porn is not a grey area however. If you are uncertain as to whether the individual authored this stuff, or if he just found it posted on the Internet, it shouldn't matter. The police can make that assessment, and track down the source of the pictures on their own. But without your help, the stuff will continue to occur unchecked.

Did you ever see the movie a time to kill. I wish to provoke the same thought, but not the race card: What if the child turned out to be one of your own, and he/she never told you about it because they were ashamed or scared. Let's say it wasn't your store, but someone else’s. How would you want that storeowner to handle the situation?

I used to have that same attitude in high school when I did drugs and stayed out on the street until all hours. I was a punk and thought I knew everything. You sound no different here.

The police are there because you haven't come up with a better solution to protect society. So instead of being the rebel, why don't you come up with a better Idea, and petition you local legislation.

Otherwise quit being a punk and support local authority!

NooNoo, this is not an insult, I am referring to his attitude, and not his person.

Guess you don't have much contact with children then. I can't think of any other reason you would allow a child to suffer simply because you believe the police would do nothing. Have you read the news lately about the years of work that the police have put into tracking down these creeps? How many famous people have PAID to download this rubbish?

If you had found some and had reported it, you may have saved only one child from these "people", but at least you would have saved one.

Right now you little speech says you would not even bother to save one even knowing that you could with just a little inconvenience to yourself.

Does anyone understand why PC repair shops don't do anything about it?

They don't want to be known as cops. People with warez will be afraid to take there computers to them. Microsoft wants people to take all illegal copies of Windows they see, and legally they can't install Windows onto a OS without a real legit cd-key sticker. But shops dont take people's illegal copies away.

People wouldnt shop there if they busted everything bad they saw.
They lose buisness over it in the end, what do they gain?
