    popfile spam filter

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/popfile/

I think I'm in love. this little program is amazing. it took a little bit to train it, but only about 30 min or so. It's hitting all my spam and leaving the good stuff alone.

    here's how it works.
you use the user interface to create buckets. I created a good, and $hit bucket. when it detects spam that would fall into the $hit bucket, I tell it to modify the subject line to include [$hit] at the beginning. I then tell OE to automatically delete any email with [$hit] in the subject. Mail that falls into the good bucket doesn't have any modification done to it and arrives in my inbox.

the added bonus is that I'm not getting as much spam since I started using it. most of the spam I get is in html and I think mac mentioned in another thread how there is often times code in the html that sends a receipt of sorts back to the sender when the mail is opened verifying the address and adding it to more spam lists. In OE even when I right click on a message to delete it it displays the message in my bottom pane and executes it's html code. with popfile those messages go straight to the deleted items folder. I've noticed I'm getting a lot less spam. for a while I was getting 5-6 messages a day. then it dropped to 2-3, and I actually made it through a whole day recently where I had no new messages.

you gotta give this prog a try. It falls under the killer app classification.

If you upgrade to IE 6 SP1, a new option becomes available in OE that allows you to force view all messages in plain text format, even if they are written in HTML. The vast majority of people that send me mail use plain text anyway.

    Literally.
