vmm32.vxd or vmm32.020 problem from driver download
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds to this! I don't really know what I am doing, but I keep trying. I'll try to do a succinct overview of problem:
I bought a used computer: a no-name. Took it apart and found users manual for SS7 M598. I bought an ATX Form card with mini-DIN port for PS/2 mouse, IR, and two USB ports. After installation, lots of conflicts when I plugged in Belkin USB hub and/or BUS keyboard. PS/2 mouse works okay. Modem stopped working. I bought Scott Mueller's book and did hours of research and managed to get the modem working again.
Learned how to get into BIOS setup, etc. Then the problem was: at W98SE start-up, windows tells me it needs to load driver for USB. It dials up and tries to load, but then tells me I need to load Windows 98SE CD. Uh....I don't have one.
I also get the message: error 1FB....i guess i don't have Sis 7001 PCI to USB open host controller. NOW>>>>THE BIG PROBLEM>>>>>
I went to a website and downloaded a Sis 7001 driver. When I opened it, I got the message that it was older than what was on my system and should windows save what I already had. I said yes. Now, I can't get into Windows at all. There is some problem in config. It is detecting an error or absence of one of the following: vmm.vxd, shell.vxd, vtd.vxd, vxdldr.vxd, vpicd.vxd, vwin32. Won't start in safe mode. Tried step-by-step configuration....but since I have NO idea what i'm doing, I don't know when to answer Y and when to answer N!!!!
I tried for hours last nite, tried various Y and N answers.
I have no idea how to do any commands in dos. I know NOTHING!!!!! I am in way over my head. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for your patience!!!!!

Are the cab files loaded? Did you buy the computer with the licence for window 98?

Thanks for your reply.
I don't know if CAB files are loading. Windows will not load now because it can't find krnl386.exe.......a problem that started after i downloaded a driver and now some 'library'
has an older (and invalid?) version of vmm.vdx or something.
I bought this computer with W98 already installed. It came from a small business with 3 computers.
I have a Toshiba laptop (which I am using right now) which has W98 on it (no W98 CD, but has the booklet with reg number). I wonder if I can make a disk from the laptop and put it on my other computer to get it going again?

Since this is the first time you have tried something like this on an old computer I am assuming that you have nothing on it worth saving. If that is so I would try erasing and reformatting. This is because it sounds like you have lots of old and conflicting drivers. Reformating would 'wipe the slate clean' and eliminate the conflicts.
I would also STRONGLY URGE you to get a Win98 CD. You are gong to need it. You can get them on Ebay for less than $20.00. My preliminary search turned up this.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=11229
There are probably more available! After you purchase a disk you can ask us again the best way to format and install the operating system.
I would also make sure you download the drivers to your modem, video card, sound card etc. and other devices and have them ready.
Good Luck,

Thank you!
I appreciate the link and info re: W98 CD on ebay. I have one more thing to try, and then I will follow your advice.
