    Unhappy

From the info you gave us, it will be tough... It sounds like your friend just deleted the temp files, cookies, and so forth... When you bought your machine, did it have a " Restore " disk from the manufacturer? If so, all you would do would be to put that disk into the c.d. rom, and reboot, ( losing all your saved data and newly installed programs, of course ). Can you give us a bit more info?

A lot more information would be useful. Are you talking about cleanly reinstalling the entire system?

Things you need to know to be able to do this

First, is this a branded machine, like compaq, dell, emachine? If not you need to know:

The make and model of your motherboard - some of the following maybe "onboard" that is, actually part of your motherboard.
The make and model of any pci cards, isa cards and riser cards,
The make and model of your agp card

The hardware needs device drivers... depending on what hardware you have you will need the driver cdroms/diskettes that were supplied with it - or get updated ones from the internet. Some hardware is natively supported by windows.

    What version windows 98

Other things that may have an impact on your reinstallation - whether you have a floppy drive, a cdrom, whether the bios allows the cd rom to boot the system - if not you will need a startup diskette.

You will need all the program cdroms for your games and programs - or if they come on floppies you will need those.

You will also need to back up any files that you would want to have afterwards.

Yes you can do this yourself, but be prepared for a very steep learning curve and some frustration if you do not have the right tools or information.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

Just use the restore cd's - back up what files you want first.
