    XP eating disk space?

    Working on a laptop currently where a week ago it had about 6 gig free now we are sitting at about 100 meg free...

    Nothing has been installed or downloaded. it just magically changed the ammount of data on the disk...


    Anyone head of this or had the same problem...



    They do have synk options setup with data on the server but the ammount of data that is synked is only about 1.8 gig at max with a limit set through synk manager...

    Could be the system restore feature using this space up. Also do a search for files created or modified since the last time you looked at this PC. For that much space to just disapear, there has to be a reason, probably something hidden, either by the system, or the user...

    Check the temp directories and recycle bin. There are several temp directories, one for each user, so make sure you log on as administrator and check them all. They are located in c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temp

    Don't forget to check the internet explorer caches as well.

    And don't forget about the hibernation file. If hiberation is enabled (and it likely is since this is a laptop) then a file equal in size to the amount of RAM installed in the machine will always be on the hard drive. The only way to get rid of this file is to disable hibernation.

    System Restore was my initial thought as well, but doesn't it max out at 12% disk space usage? That would only be 720 MB or so. To my knowledge SR can't be manually configured to use any more than that, or can it?

    right now the temp folders have no more than 300 meg combined...


    Yes system restore maxes out at 12% of drive space so that really couldn't be it in my mind, i did turn it down to 2% for now just to make sure i don't run out of any more space.

    Right now hibernate is set to only use 200 meg of space for that...


    Honestly things are not adding up right.... I think it is the file synk with the server, but it has limitations like the rest via a persentage.


    Hibernate? nope
    System Restore? Nope
    Server file synk? maybe?


    man this is really making me mad!

    ok ok ok

    i narrowed it down to the system restore directory that is eating up all the space


    is it ok to delete the files?

    No, you should turn off system restore first, reboot and the files should magically disappear.... if not, remove them in safe mode with system restore off.

    I have seen this issue with Windows XP and system restore chewing up HD space a few times now, and if WINXP is supposed to max out at 12% HD space, then this is this a simple bug and if so why hasn't Microshaft fixed it yet?
