AOL Email Files?
'Lo all,
Question. I"m backing up a customers system and one of the things she specifically wants is her AOL email files. I've poked around the hard drive but can't see where email files are stored. There's a Backup directory with two files, global.org and main.idx. Anyone know how those kooky folks over at AOL store their email files? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much, guys. Another tech here thought that was the case, I just wanted to make sure. Thanks again for the assistance.

However, if you download aol email it goes into a special folder. I can't remember the name of it. If you save one of their emails you can see where it went and save that folder. You can then transfer it to the new install.

FYI, if AOL is 5.0 or earlier, the mail is stored in the folder ORG, if it is the newer version 6.0 + it is stored on AOL's server. If you do an uninstall first, AOL will make a folder on the desktop with all mail downloaded, plus settings and any items they downloaded.
Hope this helps.

Are You Sure The Customers Not Reffering To Mail SAVED In Her File Cabinet In Aol?
Old Mail And Files Can Be Saved There,, And NOT Be On Server.

Agree with Trout, you can DL mail into the PFC and it won't be on the server. I may be wrong, but its always been my understanding that AOL mail gets deleted off their servers after a couple of days.
This link may help with backing up the data in the PFC

When backing up customer's AOL install's I always take a copy of the "Downloads" and "Organize" folder.
After you have re-installed AOL and logged on for the first time copy the folders back to the AOL directory and overwrite the existing folders - this will restore their favourite places and PFC - has always worked for me.

Wow, much more information on AOL usage than I ever thought I'd need to know. Thanks again for all the input, guys. As it turns out, the mail in question was of little relevance to the customer and she said not to worry about it.
