Mouse doesn't respond normally

We have a Gateway system using a two button mouse and wheel running Windows 98. As the day goes on, the pointer tends to slow down just a tick behind the actual movement of the mouse. I can plug in different mice and they seem to work fine for a few hours, and then they become slower also. I have changed the mouse settings in the control panel with no change in performance. Any ideas for a cure?

I ran across this a lot in gateway, you are basically run out of resources, run msconfig and clear out just about everythign and possibly add more memory...if there is still an issue let me know
