    BSOD: VXd errors

I am working on a Compaq PC running windows 98, integrated video and sound card. I am getting a blue screen of death startup error that says I am having a problem with a VXd located at a certain memory location. There is the option to continue by pressing any key. When I do that, the Windows 98 screen comes up, but the unit totally freezes, and I have to Ctrl-alt-Del to restart. I was able to get the unit to boot in safe mode. I disabled all of the following files one by one (through msconfig) and restarted the pc to see if I could pinpoint the location of the bootup error: config.sys, autoexec.bat, win.ini, sys.ini. The problem still persists.

I haven't scanned the disk drive for viruses yet, but I will as soon as I get the chance. Thanks in advance for any help.

HOw about posting the FULL bsod message? A. n. other vxd at a.n. other memory address is somewhat vague.

As per usual, Noo is dead on.

Post the total eror or easier yet - go to the M$ knowlege base and type in the exact error (or part of it) and it will often tell you what it means.

If you are seeing the word Vxd you may be dealing with a corrupt device driver. As you can get into safe mode - run through the list of components on the PC and see if something is hosed. Ask the user if they installed any new drivers or updates. Worth a shot.

Sorry about the vagueness. The entire message is:

An exception 06 has occurred at 0028:00000017 in Vxd ---. This was called from 0028:c1502643 in Vxd ---. It may be possible to continue normally.
*Press any key to attempt to continue
*Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart your computer.

You will lose any unsaved information in all applications.

    Press any key to continue.

Best thing to do is go here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/
and do a search for the bluescreen message. Google is sometimes helpful.

I can tell you this. That part where you said "---." is the offending module. Find out what it is asociated with and remove the device in safe mode.

A format and reinstall would solve the problem as well and much faster too.

The Vxd error turned out to be caused by the DVD drive. I disconnected the power and the problem went away. The only hard part was then finding out who made the motherboard so that I could repair the damaged video drivers. Luckily, Compaq had the driver, which didn't work. However, I was able to download and install the drivers from ibm directly.

Thanks alot for all of your help.
